World Universities Debating Championships

Macquarie University: 1996 World Champions, aiming to repeat

Tournaments  | Australs | Easters | Home

The World Universities Debating Championships is the pinnacle for all debaters across the world. Approximately two hundred universities across the world take part, and the competition is structured after the British Parliamentary style of debating.  Fenja Berglund and Ben Way of Macquarie were 1996 World Champions!

It is really a measure of the standard of Australian debating that out of the four teams in the grand final of the 1999 World Championships, three were from Australia! Macquarie made another impressive show. Out of the two teams that we entered, both performed exceptionally well. Macquarie made the semi-finals once more. Since then, Macquarie has made the Octo-Finals twice, in 2000 and 2004.

Worlds debating is a challenging, fun tournament. The two “Mini-worlds” tournaments, held in early December and hosted at Sydney University and Melbourne/Monash respectively, provide good, fun training.
