“Mini” season is upon us!

The end of each year is a wonderful time for debaters. Coming up we have three fantastic championships in the greater-Sydney area and one in New Zealand, before the World Championships. All four of these pre-Worlds tournaments are “open” to all comers. Here are the dates for the four “Minis”:

Sydney Mini – Friday November 22 – November 24

New Zealand British Parliamentary Open – Friday November 30 – December 2

Melbourne Mini – Friday 7 December – Sunday 9 November

UTS Invitational – Saturday 15 December – Sunday 16 December

Do not let the titles of these tournaments deter you! They may be called a “mini”, but these are high quality intervarsity events where people come from across the country to compete.

For more information or to register your interest in any of these prestigious and fun tournaments, do remember to email The Secretary.

Inaugural Macquarie University Public Speaking Competition

A fantastic new initiative, the inaugural competition was held at C5A232 on Monday September 15 and Tuesday September 16 from 1pm-2pm, here are a few of the topics (all from Yes Minister!):

1. The bed of nails.
2. The greasy pole.
3. The moral dimension.
4. The devil you know.
5. Party Games.

$100 cash prize for winner! $50 for runner up!

A world of debating in a website

Opening up the archive, and increasing access

The website now has a dedicated Historical Archive where you can look through the society’s annual dinner in the year 2000, its successes in the 90s and its leaps and bounds in the 2000s. We now also have a page explaining Debating in simple terms, and some useful resources to look into for in depth knowledge of the art of debating. You can now also find the contact details for the new society executive.

Macquarie Schools’ Cup (Junior Division)

What a fantastic day

Held on September 18, Proper recognition to all involved in a fantastic day, especially those who helped adjudicate. Congrats to Tangara School for Girls on winning the final. Next Schools day is the Senior one, before Uni starts back.

Sydney Pro-Am

Much better than golf!

The third annual Pro-Am was on September 16 and we sent three teams. This is always a fun tournament, where a “pro” helps out an “am”, with in reality the opposite occuring! Four rounds of five minute speeches then a final, which was on allowing religious charities to be involved in the provision of government welfare.
