The Australasian debating tournament
is the first international competition of the year, normally held in the first
week of July. As the name suggests, the entrants permitted are from
universities across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, India,
Pakistan, the Philippines, Japan and other Asian countries. The tournament is
held in Australian “threes” style, which involves three speakers and a right of
reply by each team.

Australs is billed as a high octane
tournament, with lots of fun to be had along the way. Once selected, the
debating teams train together to hone their skills and grease the oils of teamwork.
Some teams even engage in fun team-building exercises!

A brief rundown on how to debate
Australs style can be found here. In 2007 the
tournament was held at Universiti Teknologi MARA, where we had three very
successful teams, one of which was knocked out by the eventual tournament
champions. In 2008, Australs returns to the Phillipines, at Ateneo de Manila University.
