Worlds 2004 "Unofficial Report"
By Tamer Morris: Immediate Past President.
When writing a report on World’s 2004 one can talk about numerous events. One can write a very scandalous report. One can mention how Melissa Saadat partied all night long and did not return to her room until the next day. Or how Abby Millerd was caught walking around the corridors of the hotel with her shoes and her bra in her hand. Or how many of the Macquarie contingent became very efficient at playing cards (this means Dave Cramise and Dan Philips). But this will not be that kind of report. No, this will be an efficient and accurate description of World’s 2004. When describing World’s, it can be said to be a very sober tournament (this of course is in comparison to Macq’s previous efforts at debating tournaments). Of course, this can be blamed on the absence of Macq’s number one drinker, Eamon.
When entering Singapore, one instantly takes notice of the humidity! Yes, it was hot! Very hot! I don’t think I can stress enough how hot and humid it was. And due to me being an Arab, sweating was an obvious result of the heat (unfortunately, I had to suffer numerous racist remarks from on Macq debater – you know how you are Abby). So for the rest of the report please think humid thoughts. Thank you.
Macquarie sent three teams and two adjudicators to this prestigious tournament. And even with such a small contingent, Macq made their presence felt through out the tournament. Not only did one of our teams make the break, but both our adjudicators, Jo Walsh and Rupeng Chen (after the adjudicating exam) were considered as full qualified and competent at the jobs (considering this is their first worlds).
Through the nine rounds of debating Macq grow more confident, and all three teams starting seeing breaking as a plausible and achievable goal. After ever round we would meet in our usual corner discussing results and arguments. But slowly the conversation would shift to the upcoming social event; to how hot and good looking our contingent was in comparison to the other (rather not so attractive) debaters and adjudicators, to finally what the Macq girls were going to wear.
The social events at the tournament were a slight let-down. And this is due to the high cost of alcohol! Yes, Nanyang, we do not like paying $10 for our drinks! YES WE WANT FREE ALCOHOL! As you can tell, not happy Jan! The main excitement felt at these social events was Abby’s Irish admirer. Let it be noted that I like Irish people… they are soooo cool!!!!!
The high light of the tournament, other then Mel accepting the dare and "borrowing" $5 out of a tip jar, was Macq breaking. Even though we were kicked out on the first of the breaking rounds, we did not care. Macq was on too much of a high to be pulled down. Until of course we went to the social event, and find out that to buy a coke will cost you $10!! YES I AM STILL COMPLAINING!
At the end of the tournament we had all learnt a lot. Dave learnt that there is nothing wrong with a good mars bar (hint hint). Abby learnt that all other uni’s suck. Rupeng learnt that shafting in a debate is not all that good. Dan learnt that you should not anger your woman, especially in public. Siyao learnt that he is a champion debater and can go far in the sport. Jo learnt not to trust Japan’s adjudicators (especially when she is the only English speaker). Mel learnt that other people from other countries may get offended if you make fun of their names (yes nasty and nastier). While Tamer learnt that to marinate chicken one must leave it over night is the fridge with the bowl well sealed, he also learnt that some people should keep their shirts on when they go swimming.
